Senior Siena Saints catcher Gary DerHagopian’s sacrifice fly in bottom of the second scored sophomore first basemen Nate Valdez to cut the Saratoga lead down to three runs after several defensive mishaps allowed the Phillies to plate three unearned runs. Golden Eagles Drop Home Opener 4-1

Great Defensive Plays And Hard Hits Not Enough For Eagles

The hard-hitting Glens Falls Golden Eagles opened the 2009 New York Collegiate Summer League summer Thursday night against the Saratoga Phillies at East Field.

Costly defensive miscues in the first inning put the Golden Eagles in an early hole. Trailing 3-0 after the first inning, the Golden Eagles played catchup the rest of the night, but they never came all the way back.

“I thought we hit the ball well all night, we just too many fly balls,” Glens Falls Golden Eagles Head Coach John Mayotte said.  “I told the guys I’ve never seen a bad hop on a fly ball. We need to focus a little more, hit some ground balls and put some pressure on the defensive”

Trimming the Phillies lead to three runs in the second game on a sac fly to right from senior catcher Gary DerHagopian (Siena), which scored junior first basemen Nate Valdez (Central Arizona), Glens Falls seemed to put their pitching woes in the first inning behind them.

Sophomore starting pitcher Ricky Ott (University of New Orleans) lasted six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four Phillies.

“Location tough in first inning, I wasn’t hitting my spots very well at all, Ott said. “As the game went further I think everyone saw I tightened up and started hitting my spots toward the end.”

In the second inning, Valez earned a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passball before scoring the Glens Falls’ first run of the 2009 season. The Golden Eagles lone hit came on a clutch one-out single from freshmen shortstop Pepito Moreno (Pima C.C).

Heading into the final frame, Valez worked another walk, his second, as did junior third basemen Sean Lamont (Georgetown), Looking for this second RBI of the game, DerHagopian got the green light on 3-1 count with two out in the ninth.

For the second straight year in a row, the Golden Eagles lost their home opener. This time, a 4-1 loss to the Saratoga Phillies. To start off last season, the Glens Falls  strung together a three-game winning streak following their first defeat and finished the first week of the 2008 summer season with a 3-3 win-loss record.

Glens Falls dominated the season series with the Saratoga last season, winning all 10 games. The Golden Eagles look for avenge the loss this Sunday June 7, when the Phillies travel to East Field for each team’s fourth game of the 2009 season.

Despite diving stops and web gems from both ballclubs, the Phillies defense seemed to be in the right stops at the right times.

“They made some great defensive plays and their infield played spectacular all night, Mayotte said. “That’s the kind of the thing you don’t expect the first game out of the shoot.”

The Golden Eagles travel to Albany for their first road game of the season on Friday. The Dutchmen lost their opener 13-12 to the Watertown Wizard on Thursday. This weekend, the Golden Eagles play Watertown on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Saratoga on Sunday at 4 p.m.
