Former 2009 Golden Eagles Shine at Northwestern

Former 2009 Glens Falls Golden Eagles and current Northwestern Wildcats, sophomore right-handed pitcher Francis Brooke and junior third baseman Chris Lashmet continue to impress fans with their stellar play this 2010 season.

During a recent start on April 9, Brooke pitched six innings, striking out seven Penn State hitters and walking only one in Northwestern’s 11-5 win.

That same game, 2010 Golden Eagles returnee Lashmet went an incredible 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI to help even the teams’ record in Big Ten conference play.

On the season, Brooke holds a 3-2 win-loss record, leads the pitching staff in innings pitched (48.2) and walks (5). Brooke ranks second on the staff in strikeouts (34) and opponent’s batting average (.281). He’s combined for one shutout victory and has started seven games while appearing in nine.

Lashmet has hit safely in all seven games this April. In those seven games, Lashmet’s has 11 hits, including four doubles, five runs scored, and 11 RBI.

On the season, Lashmet has started and played in all but one game for the Wildcats. Lashmet leads the team in triples (3) and RBI (26). He ranks fourth on the team in batting average (.302), runs scored (17), and doubles (7). His 54 total bases, .466 slugging percentage (.466), 14 walks are good for third best on team.

Northwestern is off today, but return to Big Ten conference play this weekend when they host the Minnesota Golden Gophers for a three-game set.

Golden Eagles Lose Heartbreaker In Seven Innings

The Golden Eagles Split Doubleheader With Phillies

In the teams’ first doubleheader of the season, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles split with the Saratoga Phillies, defeating the Phillies 5-2 in game one for the first time at home in 2009, and losing 3-2 in game two for their third loss at home to the Phillies.

On the season, Glens Falls’ win-loss record in one-run games is 0-3, losing to the Phillies 3-2 back on June 7 at East Field, and losing 9-8 in extra innings to the Watertown Wizards at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

“You don’t want the big inning to hurt you, Golden Eagles head coach John Mayotte said. “One run never’s going to hurt you in a season.”

Though they still sit in first place at 10-4, with almost a three-game cushion in the NYCBL East Division, Glens Falls has lost three games at home to Saratoga.

You do your job, you’ll be in first place,”John Mayotte said. “You don’t and you’ll be in last place.”

The Golden Eagles shutout the Phillies 6-0 down in Saratoga back on June 11 and play road games against the Albany Dutchmen on Wednesday, a doubleheader against the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs this weekend, and the Phillies on the road, both Tuesday and Friday.

The Eagles host two home games against the Watertown Wizards, both Monday, June 22, and Thursday. Next Sunday, Glens Falls play home against the Dutchmen.

Singles from the freshman duo of shortstop Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern) in the second and catcher Conner Gandossy (Saint Louis) in the third failed to put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard early, even after leadoff hitter Steve Zavala (Rutgers) sacrificed Gandossy to second, and Anthony Giansanti (Siena) walked.

Both games of the doubleheader today lasted seven innings.

Glens Falls finally plated two runs in the sixth when, with one-out, freshman left fielder Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) poked a double to deep right and later stole third. After freshman designated hitter Justin Zumwalde (Pima C.C.) and Phillips both worked walks, freshman second basemen Kevin Berry (New Orleans) came up with the bases loaded and two outs looking to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game.

Berry sent a single down the right field baseline, scoring both Jones and Zumwalde. Phillips, who came charging home all the way from first on the Berry single, was called out at home on a controversial play.

“We thought he was safe and the tag never touched him,” Mayotte said. “I was following all the way down the line, waving the runner, and I had a real good look at the play.”

Homeplate umpire waits to call Eric Phillips, No.18, out at
the plate as Rodarrick Jones signals safe. The run would have tied the
game for Glens Falls in the sixth, the games' second to last inning.

“I didn’t think he ever touched him,” Mayotte complained. “But that’s the umpire’s call and you’ve got to live with what he says”.

Pinch-hitting in the ninth for sophomore first basemen Nick Valdez (Central Arizona), junior Nick Schrock (Texas Wesleyan) walked and sophomore Chris Lashmet (Northwestern), who replaced Zavala in the batters’ box, singled to shallow left. After a pass ball pushed both runners into scoring position, the Saratoga pitcher intentionally walked Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) to load up the bases for the second straight inning.

Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles failed to tie up the game and lost 3-2.

Pitching in his first start of the season, freshman right-handed Zach Kraham (Albany) lasted five innings before junior reliever Kellen Candau (Southern Illinois) entered the game for the final two. Candau tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two Phillies hitters, and decreased his ERA to 1.28 on the season.

Saratoga pitcher Tim Busbin (UC Davis) picked up the win, striking out five Golden Eagles in five innings. Offensively, the Phillies scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the fourth.

Glens Falls next plays Saratoga on the road Tuesday, June 23, and Friday, June 26.

Golden Eagles Score Six Runs In Two Innings, Win 7-4 Again

Glens Falls Now 6-1 On The Road

For the third time this season, the first place Glens Falls Golden Eagles defeated the last place Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs 7-4. The win extends Glens Falls’ first place lead to two games over the Watertown Wizards and a four and one-half games lead over the Diamond Dawgs.

Perfect in three appearances this season, junior right-hander Nathan Forer (Southern Illinois) dazzled Diamond Dawg hitters for six stellar innings, allowing zero earned runs on four hits and striking out five to down his season ERA to 0.84 on the season.

Junior southpaw Jamie Storey ((Houston Bapist) picked up his first save of the season, closing out the ninth inning with two strikeouts and zero hits. Jerry A’Hearn (Central Arizona) originally relieved starter Forer, pitching two innings and striking out three Dawgs.

Jamie Storey talks to Conner Gandossy during Tuesday's game. Story picked up his first save against the Diamond Dawgs on Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles managed singles from junior right-fielder Nick Schrock (Texas Wesleyan), Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans), and Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern) in the games’ first three innings, but were unable to spark any rallies or score any runs until the fourth inning.

Playing in this first game for Glens Falls this season, Schrock belted two hits and score one run in his four at-bats.

The Glens Falls bats exploded for six runs of their seven runs in the third and fourth innings combined, adding its final run in the eighth and defeating the Diamond Dawgs 7-4.

A walk from Jones, followed by a single to left from cleanup hitter Sean Lamont (Georgetown) started to two-run two-hit fourth. After a sacrifice bunt from Justin Zumwalde (Pima C.C.) moved both Jones and Lamont into scoring position, Phillips worked a walk, his fourth this season, to load up the bases for Chris Lashmet (Northwestern).

Lashmet then rocketed a two-run single, scoring both Jones and Lamont, for his third RBI in the past two games.

Lashmet

Jones continues his hitting streaking, smacking three hits in four at-bats against the Diamond Dawgs on Wednesday, scoring his ninth run of the season, walking for the a team-high seventh time, and knocking in his team-leading 12 RBI this summer.

Leading off the four-run, five-hit fifth inning for the Golden Eagles, Schrock singles up the middle and then steals second, which allows Anthony Giansanti (Siena) to plate Schrock for his 10th RBI this summer. Giansanti later scores on a Lamont double, followed by Zumwalde single, which puts runners on the corners. Phillips picks up an RBI on a bunt single, scoring Lamont from third with Zumwalde scoring when a fielding error allowed Lashmet to reach base safely.

After the fifth, Glens Falls led 6-0. Lamont finished with two runs scored, two hits, and one RBI. Glens Falls top five hitters scored the team’s seven runs and the top seven tallied all 12 hits, with Phillips finishing the game 2-for-3.

Pinch-hitting in the eighth, Steve Zavala (Rutgers) worked his fourth walk of the season and then stole his third stolen base this summer. scoring on a Jones’ single for the games final run.

Mohawk Valley scored one run in the sixth, trimming the Glens Falls lead to 6-1, and added three more runs in the eighth. Glens Falls finished with seven runs on 12 hits, compared to the Diamond Dawgs four runs on eight hits and three errors.

If the rains hold off tonight, Glens Falls is scheduled to play the second place Watertown Wizards for a 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first 250 fans receive a free pair of Thunderstix, courtesy of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. Golden Eagles Delight Fans With 7-2 Win

Glens Falls Makes It Back-to-Back Over Albany

Facing the Albany Dutchmen for the second straight game, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles finally came through in the middle innings, scoring five of their seven runs in the fourth, fifth, and six innings, adding another run in the eighth, and defeating the Dutchmen 7-2 on eight hits.

In front of more than 900 screaming fans, many of them children from the local school districts, the Golden Eagles improved their overall win-loss record to 8-4 on the season and moved ahead one-game over the Watertown Wizards, who they will play Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Come to the game early enough with your grandparents for Grandparents night at East Field and the first 250 fans will receive a free set of Thundersticks, which they can slam together and cheer on the hometown team as they look to extend their first place lead in the East Division.

Area school children enjoy a rare Golden Eagles home game on Tuesday morning at East Field.

Leading off the game with a base hit to shallow right, freshman Pepito Moreno (Pima C.C) scored the games’ first run when his college teammate, fellow freshman Justin Zumwalde (Pima C.C.), slapped a single past a diving shortstop and pushed the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.

Batting in the third hole, freshman left fielder Rodarrick Jones (New Orleans) then lined a single to center and stole second to move into scoring position for sophomore third basemen Sean Lamont (Georgetown) who aided in the two-run fourth inning for the Golden Eagles. With another stolen base today, Jones now leads the team with four thefts.

“I thought I was a little over aggressive trying to steal that first base,” Jones said. “I just wanted to make something happen and I did there that second time.”

Lamont followed Jones with a single of his own, followed by a sac fly from Zumwalde to advance Jones to third. With runners now at the corners, Glens Falls tried a double steal. Lamont stole second safely, which allowed Jones to scurry home on the throw, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Zumwalde would again reach base on a fielding error in the sixth, scoring a roped double deep into the left field corner by junior catcher Gary DerHagopian (Siena).

In his five plate appearances on the day, Moreno hit three singles, earned one walk, and drove in sophomore designated hitter Chris Lashmet (Northwestern) who reached base on a walk in the sixth inning.

A sacrifice by Jones in the fifth allowed junior Anthony Giansanti (Siena) to score after he reached base on an error by the opposing catcher.

“I’m comfortable with my spot in the order and we’ve got a great two-three combo,” Jones said. “Anywhere in the lineup is good, and as long as I’m in the lineup, I can’t complain about anything.”

Rodarrick Jones steals third and leads team in thefts.

In total, the Albany Dutchmen committed five fielding errors, which allowed Glens Falls to plate three unearned runs. Albany also walked three Golden Eagle hitters and beamed two others.

DerHagopian, who jacked a three-run homer against Albany on Sunday, tallied two more RBI when his seeing-eye single in the eighth scored Phillips who had reached base on a hit by pitch. In the past two games, DerHagopian has five RBI and eight total on the season, with Jones leading the team with 11 RBI.

Behind another stud pitching performance from junior southpaw Chase Richard (Southern), who tossed five shutout innings, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out in his last outing against the Albany Dutchmen, Glens Falls cruised to the five-run victory.

“Last start, Chase did an outstanding job,” Pitching Coach Brett Merritt said. “He went out there again today and kept throwing strikes.”

This afternoon, Richard did much of the same, allowing just one base runner through the games’ first four innings. Much like he did against Albany in the Golden Eagles’ second game of the season, Richard maintained his composure on the mound, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.

After an error started the inning, the next batter singled. Both those runners scored, making the game 4-2 in favor of Glens Falls. Then Richard struck out his fourth batter of the game for the innings’ first out.

“If it wasn’t for the error to start the inning, it would have been another great 1-2-3 inning” Merritt said. “We kind of had him on a pitch count, but he was still throwing strong and did a great job again today.”

The next Albany hitters also singled, but it was the double play ball and Albany’s mis-communication on the base-pads that allowed second basemen Kevin Berry (New Orleans) and shortstop Moreno to turn an inning-ending double play and stymied the Dutchmen rally.

Richard lasted two more innings after that troublesome spot there in the fourth, pitching seven total innings, allowing zero earned runs on five hits, striking out five and walking only one. Freshmen righty reliever Andrew Brown (Akron) came in to close the deal, pitching two scoreless and hitless innings. Richard leads the team with a 0.52 ERA in 17 total innings pitched.

Up next for the first place Golden Eagles, they travel to Mohawk Valley for a 7 p.m. game against the last place Diamond Dawgs. On the season, Glens Falls holds two wins over the Diamond Dawgs, winning both games, one at home and one on the road, 7-4.

The Golden Eagles host fourth place Saratoga on Friday night and again on Sunday night, looking to avenge their early home losses against the Phillies. Father’s Day is Sunday, so bring your dad out to the ballpark for Dogs on the Diamond Night.

Three Northwestern Wildcats Will Play For 2009 GF Golden Eagles

Lashmet, Brooke, Livermore To Showcase Skills In Glens Falls This Summer

Three Northwestern Wildcats head to Glens Falls this season. Sophomores, pitcher Cole Livermore and third basemen Chris Lashmet will both play for the Golden Eagles this season. Freshman pitcher Francis Brooke will also play of the Golden Eagles this season. Three Northwest Wildcats to play for Golden Eagles

Lashmet, who batted .250 with two runs scored, one walk and three RBI against the Michigan Wolverines over the weekend, now ranks third on the team in batting average (.296), hits (50), homeruns (5). His 30 RBI and 30 runs scored are good for second-best on the team. As a freshman in 2008, Lashmet started 47 games at third and finished second on the team in RBI (38), including nine multiple-RBI games and 14 multi-hit games. Look for Lashmet to be a big part of the Golden Eagles offensive onslaught this summer.

After missing all of 2008 due to a torn labrum , Livermore struggled on the mound this season, at least compared to his 2007 collegiate stats. This season, Livermore’s saved two games, which is the most of any other Wildcat pitcher. Though he’s yet to pick up a win in his 11 relief appearances, Livermore continues to improve and hopes to be back to his old form next season. His three walks in over 13 innings pitched this season is best on the team. Livermore started a team-high 12 games with four complete games in 2007. In 10 of his last 12 starts in 2007, Liver toss five or more innings.

In his last outing for the Northwestern Wildcats, freshman pitcher Francis Brooke tossed five shutout innings, allowed three hits, struck out three and walked none. Unfortunately, rain soaked the field and lightning canceled the game after six innings with both teams locked in a scoreless tie.

On the season, Brooke holds a 2-2 win-loss record, with five starts out of 14 appearances. Brooke ranks second the Wildcats in ERA (3.68) in over 36 innings of work, allowing only 15 earned runs, walking 14 and striking out 24. His two shutouts tops all Wildcat pitchers.
